Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 18

The Kerala Government has constituted special committees to implement the report submitted by Dr M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation for solving the problems faced by the agriculture sector in Kuttanad in Alappuzha district. This follows the Centre's approval for including it under Centrally-sponsored schemes and extending financial assistance to implement the recommendations of the Foundation.

The State Government will bear the cost of projects below Rs 50 lakh. The main recommendations contained in the report are for controlling floods, providing basic facilities for paddy cultivation, scientifically regulating the intrusion of saline water, progressively reducing pollution in the Vembanad lake and reconstruction of Thannermukkam bund and Thottapilly spillway. The total cost of these projects is estimated at Rs 1,825.75 crore, according to an order issued by the Government. - Our Bureau
