Kandla on growth path

Kandla port continues to maintain its tempo of growth. At a time (in the first half of current fiscal) when the major ports posted a traffic growth of a little over seven per cent and some of the ports even having failed to reach the targeted throughput, Kandla succeeded in achieving more than 23 per cent growth and that too on a higher base. But it will be wrong to presume that the port is without its problems. For example, the container throughput during the period was l ess than satisfactory. There was a drop in throughput, marginally though. The two container berths, which have been leased out to a private firm, need to have better rail connectivity, feel users. It might be noted that the port is planning to construct a broad gauge line from Gandhidham to Kandla to provide double-line broad gauge connectivity to the port and the work will be executed by Western Railway. Another area which, according to informed sources, perhaps deserves a little more attention is boosting the barge traffic. At Tuna, which is about 10 km from Kandla port, there is a barge jetty but the volume of traffic handled by the jetty, it is felt, could hope to increase only after dredging of the waterfront. The port authorities, it is learnt, will soon finalise the dredging contractor.
