Ship recycling rule roll-out

The UN’s International Maritime Organisation’s marine environment protection committee (MEPC) has succeeded in finalising its ship recycling convention for adoption next year, reports Shipping Gazette. The MEPC, at its 58th session from October 6 to 10 in London, approved the text of the draft ship recycling convention to be implemented worldwide. It will now be circulated for consideration and adoption at the Hong Kong conference due next Ma y. The convention will regulate the design, construction, operation and preparation of ships to facilitate safe, environmentally-sound recycling, without compromising the safety and efficiency as well as establishing enforcement mechanisms, the report quotes a statement of the organisation. Ship recycling yards will be required to provide a ship recycling plan for each vessel. Effective measures have to be adopted to ensure that ship recycling facilities comply with the convention. A series of guidelines is also being suggested for proper implementation of the convention.
