Land acquisition pains

This is with reference to the article “Easing land acquisition pains” (Business Line, October 17).

Although agriculture contributes only 17 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product, it forms the basic livelihood of a larger proportion of the population, and depriving the farmers of their holding will drive them into abject poverty.

With no alternate means of livelihood available, they will have no escape from starvation.

Lumpsum payment of compensation will find its way to expenses, avoidable and unavoidable.

In rural and semi-rural areas, the land value will not be high and even market price may not be a real compensation.

Therefore, the real compensation would be a rehabilitation process for which the companies acquiring the land should make provision for.

The government should frame a well-thought-out and pragmatic policy for rehabilitating the oustees instead of thinking that a fair compensation has been paid.
