IMD sets up watch for Bay ‘low’

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 19 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has set up a watch for a ‘low’ over the southwest Bay of Bengal as an easterly wave trained its focus towards the southeast coast of India.

The fairly widespread rainfall activity over the south peninsula and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is expected to get further leg-up in the process.

Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala during the next two days, the IMD said in a separate statement of caution.

The Chennai Met Centre said the 24 hours ending Sunday morning saw rainfall occur at many places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Outlook until Tuesday said rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Lakshadweep, and at a few places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, coastal and south interior Karnataka.

The scheduled launch of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandrayaan-1 lunar mission on October 22 could see the northeast monsoon engaging itself into top gear. The east-west shear zone of monsoon turbulence would have been established by then with a ‘rain generator’ system forecast to spring up along the Kerala coast as well.

Meanwhile, in the north, a fresh western disturbance is scheduled to push into Jammu and Kashmir and the Western Himalayan region during the next two days. Isolated rain or snow is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 24 hours and increase thereafter.

The well marked ‘low’ over southwest Arabian Sea (away from Indian coast) is likely to concentrate into a depression and move in a west-northwesterly direction. But the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre ruled out the formation of a cyclone during the next 24 hours.
