Shipping/Ports Industry & Economy - Trade & Labour Unions Transport workers’ body observes national demands day Our Bureau Kochi, Oct. 20 The port and dock workers observed national demands day at major ports by heeding to the call of the Water Transport Workers Federation of India. The workers are demanding, among other things, the approval of the proposal seeking wage settlement in five years for port and dock workers and payment of PLR for 2006-07 and 2007-08. They also want Haldia, JNPT and Cochin ports to be permitted to do capital dredging to accommodate large ships and implementation of the RK Jain committee’s recommendations on filling up more than 17,000 vacancies in major ports. The federation has concerned about the inordinate delay in concluding new wage settlement on the charter of demands submitted by the five recognised federations in January 2007, Mr T. Narendra Rao, General Secretary of the federation, said. The concern was conveyed to the Shipping Minister. Further, a settlement under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, under section 12(3) was arrived at on July 15 before the Chief Labour Commissioner and the Indian Ports Association. Accordingly, it is agreed that the standard wages for computation of PLR would be raised from Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,500 from April 2, 2006. But the remaining PLR has not been paid and is payment is awaiting the approval of the Union Cabinet, he said. More Stories on : Shipping/Ports | Trade & Labour Unions
