Hyderabad, Oct. 20 Universities should prepare a global cadre of professionals with skill sets in science and technology to realise the dream of making India a developed nation by 2020, according to the former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Delivering a distinguished lecture to mark the 10th anniversary of International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) here on Monday, Mr Kalam said, “Excellent minds are needed in basic science, research and education.

“We have about 540 million youth in the country who should work to make India a developed nation by using tools from science and technology. For this, we need a greater focus on higher education. The universities should increase their throughput from the present 11 per cent to 15 per cent by 2015,” he said. Citing examples from the life of great scientists such as Sir C.V. Raman, he advised the students to inculcate commitment to purpose, making science as a mission of life and scientific magnanimity to recognise and nurture talent.

Later, while responding to queries, Mr Kalam said the rural-urban divide could be bridged effectively by following the ‘Pura’ model, which envisages creating urban amenities in rural areas though the use of modern technology.

“I think the Government is developing a model to develop two ‘Puras’ in each district,” he added.
