Kochi, Oct. 21

Instead of looking to the West for opportunities and career growth, management students in India should look at the country’s abundant resources, growth potential and the opportunities for competent professionals in all segments, said Mr Venugopal C. Govind, Managing Partner of Varma and Varma Chartered Accountants.

Delivering a lecture on ‘Emerging India – Opportunities and Challenges for the Young’ at the Toc H Institute of Science and Technology organised by the Business Line Club on Tuesday, he called upon young professionals to acquire the needed know-how and expertise to undertake higher responsibilities.

In view of the tremendous economic growth potential emerging in India, employment opportunities would be vast in all segments of the economy, particularly in infrastructure and service sectors.

India has an inbuilt value system, which needs to be rediscovered and developed, Mr Govind said. He stressed the need to become well-groomed professionals to be able to face challenges with self-confidence and to take the required measure of risk in business.

Absence of adequate capital, technology and management are the three factors which affects the growth at any stage. Fortunately, India has reached a stage where we can get over all this. Given the situation, students must empower themselves through continuous learning and acquiring new skills, Mr Govind said.

The objective of a management student, he said, is to become a thorough professional and learn things happening around the world. However, Mr Govind reminded the students that it was professional mismanagement that has led to financial crisis in several companies in the US and other countries, he said.

Mr John V. Kuruvilla, Principal of the college, also spoke. Earlier, Mr K.P. Narayanan, Assistant Regional General Manager, The Hindu, introduced the guest to the audience. Ms Tessy Jacob, MBA student, welcomed the gathering and Ms Uma Krishnakumar, MBA student, proposed a vote of thanks.
