Chennai, Oct. 23 Loan growth to the housing sector decelerated slightly in the second quarter. Home loans grew at about 14 per cent or by about Rs 32,792 crore during the year up to August 31, 2008. Comparatively, in the previous year for the same period (September 2006 – August 2007), housing loans grew by Rs 34,333 crores or at 17 per cent.

This was according to the Macroeconomic and Monetary Developments (mid-term review) statement put out by the Reserve Bank of India on the eve of its half yearly credit policy announcement.

Housing loans outstanding as on August 31st 2008 amounted to Rs 268,804 crore and constituted 11.61 per cent of all bank loans outstanding as on that date. Bank loans grew at a robust pace of 27 per cent during the one year period up to August 31.
