Cotton Prolonged monsoon delays cotton arrivals
Gayathri G Chennai, Oct. 24 The prolonged rainy season across much of the country pushed back harvest and ginning of cotton, reflected in the latest arrivals data. Data available with Globecot, a global consulting firm for the fibre and textile industries, suggest that cumulative arrivals through the week ending October 18 stand at 1.3 million bales (170 kg), 21.3 per cent less than last year. The pace of arrivals this year lags behind compared with the same period a year ago in almost every State, reflecting the widespread delay. The lower season-to-date volume is not particularly worrisome yet, considering it is equates to only about four days of arrivals. “Given reports that the volume of rain from the monsoon was close to normal across the country — if a little delayed — several organisations continue to project that total production will rise from last year, implying that cumulative arrivals will eventually surpass last year’s total,” Globecot said.
