Apollo doctors claim 18 cochlear implants in a day

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 25 Doctors at Apollo Hospitals have claimed that they have achieved a record by doing 18 cochlear implants (surgical intervention to correct severe hearing problems) in a day on Friday. Dr E.C. Vinay Kumar, who led the team to achieve the feat, said the problem could be corrected if detected early.

Addressing newspersons here on Saturday, he said the team had conducted 200 cochlear implants (100 this year). “The idea behind doing 18 on a single day is to make people aware of the growing problem,” he said. “Unwanted medication in early stages of pregnancy and consanguine marriages are the two major reasons for the problem. But awareness levels are too low, resulting in the increased number of cases.” Putting things in perspective, he said as against a backlog of over 1.5 million patients, all the hospitals in India were doing just 2,500 a year. “This needs huge attention from the public and the Government,” the doctor said.

Apollo is likely to get a place in Guinness and Limca books of records for the achievement. Officials of the two record registries were present as the doctors performed the surgeries.
