Websense alert on spam attack

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Oct. 28 Internet security solutions company Websense is advising users to be ‘on guard’ considering the sudden increase in malicious spam attacks targeted at Web 2.0 sites.

The Security Labs ThreatSeeker network discovered a new malicious, visual engineering spam campaign sent by Web 2.0 social networking site Hi5.

A release from Websense said that it had on October 13 identified a social engineering spam campaign on social networking site Hi5, which was similar to the attack related to Facebook – ‘add friend’.

The email in Spanish language was spoofed and appeared to have come from hi5.com. When the recipient clicked on the fake friend’s photograph, a Trojan horse got downloaded into his system.

The malicious application, according to Websense, aimed to steal confidential logins for a popular Mexican Bank. On October 14, the lab discovered that MSN Messenger was used as a lure in malicious spam.

Earlier(October 12), the lab identified and reported a blog on new ‘Low Volume Under-the-radar’ malicious LinkedIn spam. Its ThreatSeeker network is said to have come across 40 such messages the same day.

“The number could be small, but the malware authors have good reason for the same, for it helps keep their efforts under the radar and helps achieve their ultimate goal,” the release reasoned.

Stating that the social engineering aspects of these messages were interesting and at first glance made the messages appear almost believable, the company release explained that LinkedIn is another Web 2.0 site.
