Outlook States - Tamil Nadu India needs to improve IT infrastructure, R&D: Study L.N. Revathy Coimbatore, Oct. 28 India has moved down two places to the 48th position, with an overall score of 28.9, in the 2008 IT Industry competitiveness index, from its 2007 ranking of 46. While being rated ahead of China, the findings of the study, sponsored by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) and conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reveal that India has performed quite well in business environment and support for IT industry development, but needed to improve in areas such as IT infrastructure and research and development. BSA, according to its Vice-President and Regional Director for Asia Pacific, Mr Jeff Hardee, hopes that the study would be a tool for Governments to make adjustment in their policies and improve their economy’s IT competitiveness over time. The study, now in its second year, has assessed and compared the IT industry environment across 66 countries to determine the extent to which they enable the IT sector competitiveness and production. “There is a strong link between the presence of IT competitiveness enablers and the strength of local technology economies,” Mr Denis McCauley, Director, Global Technology Research, EIU, said. Although the top 20 economies remain the same as in 2007, nine countries have moved up and 11 have gone down in ranking this year. The top five in order of ranking in Asia Pacific are Taiwan, Australia, South Korea, Singapore and Japan. Mr Hardee said ‘talent is a paramount asset for any country’s IT industry and those with a strong base of IT talent such as Russia, India and China will continue to attract global technology firms.
