Retail investors seek exemptions from STT, service tax

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Oct. 28 With erosion of value in their stocks, the retail investors in Madurai, as every where in the country, are a deeply dejected lot.

Mr A.S. Dharmarajan is one among them. Seventy years old, he earns his livelihood by writing accounts in a numbers of shops. Though his exposure is not much, whatever little investment he had done with a long- term perspective is now completely lost. The system has not taken care of investors like him, he told Business Line.

Mr G. Balakrishnan, President, Madurai Investors Association, said retail investors expect to be exempted from security transaction tax and service tax at the earliest opportunity. The speculative loss for them should be allowed to be adjusted against their earnings from other sources to continue their investment activities. The Tamilnadu Investors Association has been approached to take up the matter with appropriate authorities, he added.
