New Mangalore port marshalling yard gets one more rail line


The number of railway lines at the marshalling yard, which was five in 2005, has increased to 11 now.

Mangalore, Nov. 2 To provide better infrastructure for smooth handling of cargo generated at the hinterland, New Mangalore Port Trust opened the sixth railway line at the Panambur marshalling yard in New Mangalore.

Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, who flagged off a rake at the new line, told Business Line that the railway infrastructure at the marshalling yard helps improve efficiency.

The number of railway lines at the marshalling yard, which was five in 2005, has increased to 11 now. Of this, 10 are in marshalling yard and one is inside the port premises. Of the 10 lines, NMPT has developed six lines and Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd developed four lines. Following the addition of railway lines, the traffic has also witnessed a growth over the years. He said that the number of cargo moved by rail increased to 61.85 lakh tonnes in 2007-08 as against 5.67 lakh tonnes during 2004-05 (RPT 2004-05).

During the current fiscal till October-end, 33.39 lakh tonnes of cargo were moved by rail as against 26.35 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.

NMPT has also strengthened the old lines, and new lines were added.

Mr Shekhar Pujari, President of New Mangalore Port Stevedores Association, said that the first rake on the new line carried around 2,500 tonnes of fertiliser cargo to the hinterland.
