Hyderabad, Nov. 2 The sixth edition of BioAsia 2009 will be held in Hyderabad from February 2-4 next year at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC).

Announcing the event details at a press conference, Mr B.P. Acharya, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC), said that delegates from about 45 countries have already registered for the event.

The participating countries include Germany, the US, Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands, Iran, Switzerland, Spain, Japan and 17 other member countries in the Asian region.

“The event will discuss issues relating to the industrial and agri biotechnology. There will be parallel sessions on agri biotechnology, industrial biotechnology and separate sessions will be organised for the benefit of biotechnology students on the prospects of biotechnology,” he said.

The three-day event also will see business-to-business meetings, international trade show, a CEO conclave and placement opportunities in biotech sector, among others.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, Mr Seyed E. Hasnain, said Hyderabad with its cluster of biotech companies, “genome valley” and universities and research institutions was the ideal venue for the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Utkarsh Palnitkar, Partner and Head (Advisory Services) of Ernst and Young, said that the global meltdown may affect flow of funds to the bio-technology sector. But from the Indian context, he added, it could throw up partnering opportunities with global companies.

According to him, in 2007 $23 billion funding was available for bio-technology worldwide, whereas 2008 could turn out to be challenging year for raising funds for the sector.

“But this is the time for Indian companies to change their mindset and opt for risk-and-reward model to benefit in the long run and look for profitable acquisitions in the US and Europe,” he said.
