Letters US elections The prominence given by the Indian media to the presidential elections in the US is disproportionate, unbelievable and unnecessary. Since our Independence, the US has never been one of our best friends. Due to the lack of foresight among our political leaders in the past, we probably missed opportunities to be close to the country and become economically a great power. Today, the US’ policies affect almost all the countries, including India. Recent events and realities have made the two countries come much closer. An example is the nuclear treaty. The much-touted treaty is more a commercial one; the US does not want to lose the commercial interests and gains to other nations. The US has more to gain by providing export opportunities to the companies manufacturing nuclear power plants. Generosity on the part of the US is not the prime factor; it is purely self-interest. As far as India is concerned, there will be no radical changes in foreign policy, irrespective of whether McCain or Obama becomes president. Neither of them will hand out any concessions. The US elections means little for India. K.Venkataraman Mumbai
