Our Bureau

Kochi, Nov. 3 Dr George Thomas, a 61-year-old mathematician, inventor, professor and philanthropist, on Monday embarked on a 1,030-km run for the environment from Kanyakumari across various cities, towns and villages in Kerala.

This will be the inaugural run of the many runs of EcoRun India, which rests on the theme Desire the Welfare of Others.

Dr Thomas intends to run about 22 km everyday between 6.05 a.m. and 9.00 a.m. and conclude the inaugural run in 46 days at the Mookaambika temple in Karnataka. He will visit over 34 cities across Kerala and cross Uppala, Mangalore, Mulki, Padubidri and Udupi before reaching the temple. Throughout the journey, the professor will meet and address students and the public at various schools and colleges.

Details of the run are available in the EcoRun brochure on www.ecorun.in.

According to Dr Thomas, “The EcoRun is to encourage people to desire the welfare of others in all we do, including care of the environment. As the major sub-theme this year, let us refrain from burning plastics and reduce the amount of carcinogenic chemicals released into the atmosphere.”

Dr Thomas lives in Canada and Kerala and also works in the USA for MathPath, one of the two summer camps he founded in the US. Dr Thomas taught mathematics for several years in the US and founded several academic non-profit organisations there.

Supporting Dr Thomas in his EcoRun is India’s first electric car manufacturer, Reva Electric Car Company (RECC), and the Kerala Tourism Board. While Kerala Tourism will be the official hotel partner for the run, one electric car from Reva carrying his support crew will accompany the professor throughout his journey.

Speaking on the EcoRun, Mr R. Chandramouli, President, Sales and Marketing, RECC, said: “This effort exemplifies what we as individuals can do to make a difference to the environment, by choosing environment-friendly habits or products – be it transport, lighting, reuse of products or recycling. Reva is happy to be associated with the EcoRun.”
