Outlook Financial crisis not to hit Posco’s Orissa steel plant
The State Government has so far not been able to acquire any land for the project in three gram panchayats of Jagatsinghpur due to stiff opposition from the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti. Our Bureau Bhubaneswar, Nov 3 Despite not having taken possession of any land for its proposed 12-million-tonne capacity steel plant in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district, the Director of Posco-India, Mr G.W. Sung, on Monday expressed hope that things will now move in favour of the company. The land acquisition issue will be sorted out and the company would go ahead, Mr Sung told presspersons after attending a review meeting at the State Secretariat here. He also said that the current international financial crisis will not affect the company’s project in Orissa. Although no official version about the discussion was available immediately, sources said the company was given assurance of early acquisition of land for the steel plant project in Jagatsinghpur and the setting up of a committee to look into the environment protection aspects of the project. The State Government has so far not been able to acquire any land for the project in three gram panchayats of Jagatsinghpur due to stiff opposition from the Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, an organisation opposing land acquisition for the steel venture in the area. As regards the rehabilitation and resettlement package for those who would be displaced to make space for the project, the company and the Government have also not been able to finalise the package so far. The R&R package for the project would be finalised only after it was cleared by the district level rehabilitation and periphery development advisory committee. Besides, the State Government’s move to recommend Posco-India’s application to the Central Government for grant of prospecting licence in respect of Khandadhar iron ore mines is also facing opposition from various quarters. The only thing that has gone in favour of the project so far was the Supreme Court’s order allowing the State government’s request for diversion of forest land that came within the 4,004 acres earmarked for the steel project in Jagatsinghpur. Out of the total 4,004 acres earmarked for the project, around 3,000 acres came under forest land category.
