‘Casual approach won’t do in tackling desertification’

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Nov. 4 The Director-General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Dr William Dar, has said “business as usual can’t continue when it comes to dealing with land degradation”.

Dr Dar, who is also the Chair of Committee on Science and Technology of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), said the lands were facing increasing threats of degradation. “Without a healthy atmosphere, land and biological systems cannot be sustained,” he said here in a press release.

Scientific approaches

The Committee on Science and Technology (CST) of UNCCD was in the process of generating a framework using the data collected globally on biophysical and socio-economic trends. “This will lead to evolving scientific approaches in the affected areas to mitigate drought,” he said.

Dr Dar said positive impacts on combating land degradation could come only with the application of good science. “If we fail to combat land degradation and desertification, the consequences can be disastrous. We must use science to become better stewards of our precious inheritance,” he said.
