Opinion - Letters
Dramatic victory

The historic win of Barack Obama in the 2008 US presidential elections to become the country’s 44th president-elect and its first African-American president will bring great hope for Asian countries, which can look forward to better and more cordial relations with the world’s most powerful country.

Mr Obama won with an impressive margin of 338 electoral votes as compared to his opponent, John McCain, who could muster only 159.

Being the first black leader of his nation, Mr Obama has his work cut out for him in that he has a lot to deliver and improve the standard of living of the blacks in the US.

India can expect a good working relationship with the US, including nuclear technology transfer, and a continuation of co-operation post the signing of the nuclear treaty. The US people have voted emphatically for change, both in the White House and in the country’s softer approach to the rest of the world rather than hegemonic aggression.
