Dairy & Dairy Products States - Gujarat Move to hike organised sector’s share to 65% in National Dairy Plan
Our Bureau Ahmedabad, Nov 5 National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has proposed to increase the share of organised sector from the existing 30 per cent to 65 in the National Dairy Plan (NDP) to ensure the supply of quality milk to consumers and secure the future of the country’s dairying. The annual report of NDDB for 2007-08 states that a draft NDP has been proposed to increase the country’s milk production to meet the projected demand of 180 million tonnes by 2021-22. With an estimated outlay of Rs 17,300 crore, the NDP would focus on the productivity measures to enhance milk production as the average annual production would have to double to five million tonnes over the next 15 years, and strengthen and expand infrastructure to procure, process and market milk through the existing and new institutional structures. India remained the largest milk producing country in 2007-08 with a share of close to 15 per cent of the total world milk production. However, a combination of factors, led by the high GDP growth in particular, has led to a rapid increase in the domestic demand for milk. The producer’s prices for milk continued to increase leading to a corresponding rise in consumer prices. Milk procurementDuring the year, dairy cooperatives procured about 8.3 million tonnes of milk, registering an annual growth of 5.4 per cent. On an aggregate, cooperatives procured about 14 per cent of the national marketable milk surplus from around 21 per cent of the country’s villages and an estimated 18 per cent of rural milk-producing households. Milk by cooperatives registered an increase of 4.4 per cent over the previous year. Dr Amrita Patel, Chairman, said that NDDB remains committed to assisting dairy cooperatives to strengthen their business and provide better services to their members. NDDB is also implementing a complimentary cooperative strategy by promoting producer institutions (new generation cooperatives) in eight states. Recognising the importance of increasing productivity, NDDB provided a range of technical and managerial services, including establishing standards and protocols for quality bull and semen production.
