Gandhiji and Obama

It’s heartening to note that the first African-American President-elect, Mr Barack Obama, has been drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, who led the nation by example in his non-violent resistance against British rule (Business Line, November 6).

Gandhiji’s was an epitome of democracy and it’s not surprising for a democrat like Obama being influenced by the Mahatma’s ideals. The racial discrimination that prevailed then made Gandhiji preach and practice ideals such as non-violence, truth and so on. But his unswerving pursuit of these goals ultimately made a mark in world history.

For the young US President-elect Obama, reviving the American economy from recession, fighting growing terrorism across the globe and establishing good political relations with all countries are indeed real challenges. One hopes he will be able to handle these tasks with aplomb and create history.
