According to the well-known management guru, Peter F Drucker, "Time is the most important of resources. If you cannot manage this resource, it is difficult to manage any other resource effectively."

Quoting from the management expert, Mr Vikramaditya Duggal from the Faculty of the State Bank Staff College said time is the most important of resources and if a person learns to manage time, it will be easy to recognise various opportunities coming in life.

Mr Duggal said at the very outset let it be clarified that time cannot be managed. It is the self who needs to be managed vis a vis the time available to him or her. This is possible only by way of exercising choices in life.

Referring to the time management matrix of Stephen Covey, he said activities can be classified into four quadrants under the heads Urgent, Not Urgent, Important and Not Important.

Speaking to the management students of the St Anthony's P.G. College, Ghatkesar as part of the Business Line Club lecture, Mr Duggal pepped up his presentation with examples and illustrations. He explained how time allotted to activities such as taking care of health, giving time to relations, gaining knowledge for career advancement etc., creates a sense of direction in life.

What are the effective ways of time management? Mr Duggal said the first thing was to believe in action: It is important to understand that it is only actions which give us results. People who succeed are those who translate information and knowledge they possess into action. Others remain busy in complaining and blaming.

The second aspect was Personal Responsibility: It is each one's personal responsibility to use his or her time productively. No one else can do it for any other person. Others can only provide information or support. Having clarity of goal, avoiding procrastination were other important factors to be addressed.

Mr Duggal made two other important suggestions that the students could follow. The Swiss Cheese: Using this principle, big tasks can be cut into smaller pieces and then completed over a period of time.

Organise - avoid clutter: Organising oneself helps in saving time for searching items. Similarly, we must get rid of clutter from our houses, offices and minds because it consumes a lot of energy. Removing clutter creates space for new and better things to come in life, he added.
