AP handicrafts expo in Kochi

Kochi, Nov. 6 Lepakshi, the 12-day exhibition-cum-sale organised by the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation, has commenced here at the Gangothri Kalyana Mandapam.

The products on display included hand-woven sarees from Pochampalli, Gadwal, Narayanapet and Rich South Silks. There will be special discounts on handicrafts and handloom items.

Mr K.V. Subbanna, Manager, Lepakshi Handicrafts Emporium, said the corporation markets the production of over 2 lakh artisans through a network of 14 sales emporia with the trade name Lepakshi. It has achieved a total sales turnover of Rs 47.50 crore in 2006-07.

It procures the production of the local crafts at their prices after examining the skills and quality of the products.

The corporation organises exhibitions in various places all over the country to popularise the traditional crafts and help the graft person increase their earnings by way of sales in these exhibitions.

It invites artisans craft persons in different craft media to demonstrate their production directly to customers in these programmes. The corporation achieved a total sales turnover of Rs 13.79 crore from 79 exhibitions in the year 2006-7.

It is also participating in the International Trade Fairs to assess the demand for the Andhra Pradesh handicrafts and explore the possibility of entering into the export market.

The recent participation in these fairs organised in the US, the UK, Germany have drawn good response.
