‘TN must rationalise power tariff’

Our Bureau

Chennai, Nov. 6 Tamil Nadu has to expedite commissioning of new power projects as outlined in the budget such as 600 MW each in North Chennai and Mettur thermal plants and 1,600 MW Udangudi power plant.

According to a study ‘Tamil Nadu: Unfolding the economic prosperity’ initiated by the Associated Chamber of Commerce jointly with the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the State Government should also rationalise the power tariff and make it affordable to the small powerloom operators in the State.

The study further says, “The cost of power is exorbitant in the State compared with Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. The industrial competitiveness is reduced due to high cost and poor quality.”

Employment opportunities

The power situation notwithstanding, the Assocham President, Mr Sajjan Jindal, who presented the study, said the State would create direct and indirect employment opportunities for over one lakh skilled and unskilled workforce in the next three to five years in sectors including real estate, automobiles, power and telecom.
