Tea imports up at 12.68 mkg during Jan-Aug

Kolkata, Nov. 7 Between January and August this year, India imported 12.68 million kg of tea at an average price of Rs 73.36 per kg as compared to 9.39 million kg (Rs 69.11 per kg) in the same period of 2007, according to statistics released by the Indian Tea Association.

The largest quantity, 5.12 million kg (3.64 mkg), was imported from Nepal, followed by Indonesia, 2.46 million kg (1.13 mkg), Kenya, 1.91 million kg (1.91 mkg), Vietnam, one million kg (0.55 mkg), China, 0.66 mkg (0.34 mkg), Argentina, 0.51 mkg (0.54 mkg), Malawi, 0.36 mkg (0.34 mkg), Sri Lanka, 0.25 mkg (0.27 mkg), and others, 0.41 mkg (0.67 mkg).

The import from Sri Lanka attracted the highest price of Rs 194.13 per kg (Rs 130.66 per kg) and from Argentina the lowest price of Rs 45.5 per kg (Rs 47.09 per kg).

Jan-Sept period

Between January and September this year, India exported 139.9 mkg worth Rs 1,504.58 crore, comprising 73.1 mkg of North Indian teas (Rs 923.95 crore) and 66.8 mkg of South India teas (Rs 580.83 crore).

During the same period last year (2007), the export volume was 124.5 mkg (Rs 1,280.10 crore), comprising 66.7 mkg of North Indian teas (Rs 828.82 crore) and 57.7 mkg of South Indian varieties (Rs 451.28 crore).

Price realisation up

In other words, in the first nine months, India not only exported an additional 15.5 million kg of tea vis-À-vis the same period of last year but the average price realisation per kg was also up by Rs 4.68 and, as a cumulative effect of all this, export earning was up by Rs 224.48 crore, suggest the ITA statistics.
