Tea Good demand for Assam CTC leaf teas Our Bureau Kolkata, Nov. 9 Last week, Assam CTC leaf teas at North India auctions met with good demand, according to tea auctioneers. Liquoring sorts were irregularly lower while medium and plainer sorts tended easier. Liquoring Dooars saw good demand at firm to occasionally dearer rates while the remainder tended lower. Dust teas sold at last levels with some fibrous and poorer sorts declining in value. The major blender and Tata Tea were active with fair support from other packeteers. There were fewer inquiries from the western region dealers, while other internal sections were selective. Export buyers operated primarily for larger brokens and fannings. Darjeeling offerings saw good demand from the traditional exporters and packeteers as well as local dealers. Whole leaf grades sold around last levels. Improved brokens were steady but the remaining brokens and fannings tended lower. In the Orthodox sale, selected whole leaf grades were irregularly easier while the remainder tended lower. Larger brokens met with better enquiry but at easier rates. Smaller brokens saw less demand and sold at easier rates with some withdrawals. Fannings were irregularly lower. West Asian and CIS and shippers were the mainstay of the market with good support from the major blender. CROPThe September crop figure for North India at 84.9 million kg shows a decline of 7.9 mkg compared to the previous year. The All India September crop at 107.0 mkg shows a decline of 6.2 mkg. The January to September cumulative figures for North stands at 529.6 mkg, an increase of 1.5 mkg, while the corresponding All India figure now stands at 706.7 mkg, an increase of 17.4 mkg. Global marketsThe Mombasa market saw less demand with all categories tending lower. Afghanistan lent strong support while Pakistan packers maintained interest and the Bazaar showed more enquiry. There was less interest from Egyptian packers, Sudan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Yemen and other West Asian countries operated at lower levels but the Egyptian Government sector was quieter and the UK subdued. Somalia was active. The Colombo auction witnessed improved demand for selected better sorts but levels continued to ease for the remainder. Poorer categories met with withdrawals. More Stories on : Tea
