Opinion - Letters
Industrial relations

The Ashok Leyland management must be congratulated for agreeing to pay full wages to workers for “16 non-working days” in November and December (in the wake of drop in the demand for vehicles) in the expectation of getting compensation of labour/work (for half the paid holidays) from them (workers) when the demand picks up and necessitates higher production (Business Line, November 9). There may be ups and downs in business, but it is the mutual trust (between management and workers/staff) that can guarantee good industrial relations and prosperity.

Having said that, companies that are financially sound, transparent in all their business dealings and take labourers into confidence in certain important managerial decisions alone can agree to a type of understanding that Ashok Leyland has entered into with its employees’ union.
