Oilseeds & Edible Oil Kharif oilseeds output: No change in trade outlook
Estimate for the current season soyabean output is 98.9 lt, up from 94.6 lt last year. M.P.with 58 lt is the largest contributor.
G. Chandrashekhar Mumbai, Nov 10 Total production of major oilseeds during the ongoing kharif 2008 harvest season is estimated at 164.1 lakh tonnes, little changed from last kharifs 164.9 lt, according to the Central Organisation of Oil industry and Trade, which held its annual meet in Ahmedabad over the weekend to arrive at the trade estimate. Over 300 delegates from different parts of the country congregated to discuss trade related issues and arrive at crop estimate. SoyabeanAmongst major oilseeds, soyabean continues to top the production chart. Estimate for the current season is 98.9 lt, up from 94.6 lt last year. Madhya Pradesh with 58 lt is the largest contributor, followed at a distance by Maharashtra 29 lt and Rajasthan 6.3 lt. It is yet another year when groundnut has continued to fade in importance. Trade estimate of groundnut in-shell output is 45.2 lt, marginally down from last kharifs 48.7 lt (revised). With 21 lt. Gujarat accounts for close to half of the national kharif season groundnut output. SouthIndia comprising Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tami Nadu together contributes 14 lt. Sunflower seed production has declined to 4.0 lt (5.3 lt) as Karnataka suffered errant rainfall. Sesame seed too is down to 3.0 lt (4.5 lt) because of decline in central India. Castor seed production is estimated at 10.7 lt, up from last years 9.1 lt. As usual Gujarat dominates with 8.0 lt contribution. Interestingly, trade estimate of kharif 2008 oilseeds production is less than estimated by the Ministry of Agriculture (First advance estimate) which has placed total output at 179.5 lt with soyabean at 99.4 lt and groundnut in-shell at 61.0 lt. The sharp difference in the estimate for groundnut between the Government and the trade needs to be reconciled. More Stories on : Oilseeds & Edible Oil
