Indian population to overtake China by 2050: Report

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 13 By 2050, India would overtake China to become the most populous country with a projected population of 1.658 billion people.

According to the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA)’s State of the World Population 2008 report, while India’s 1.5 per cent average population growth rate, in comparison to china’s 0.6 per cent for (2005-2010) will make it make it the populous country by 2050.

This year report titled ‘Reaching Common Ground: Culture, Gender and Human Rights’ stressed on the importance of culture for the long-term success of any development programme. “Cultures must be seen in their wider context: They are influenced by external circumstances and change in response. They are not static: People are continuously involved in reshaping them, although some aspects of culture continue to influence choices and lifestyle for long periods,” said the report. According to Ms Ena Singh, Assistant Country Representative, UNFPA, India has a long way to go in maternal mortality ratio, reproductive health, and safe motherhood standards. “Achieving the millennium programme goals, gender equality, human rights and for any change to be long lasting would require for it to come from within the culture and require a change in mind set,” said Ms Singh. “Development of the health sector would be of no use if a woman in labour or in need of medical intervention was not rushed to the hospital in time,” she added.
