Quality teas get high bids at Coonoor sale

Coonoor, Nov. 16 Market was generally steady at Sale No: 46 of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) auctions on Friday despite the offer of year’s highest volume of 16.51 lakh kg as demand picked up for quality invoices.

Among CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, four grades of Darmona Estate, auctioned by J Thomas and Co, entered Rs 100 price-band. Two marks of Homedale Estate, auctioned by Global Tea Brokers, remained in this premium category – RD Rs 112 and another line RD Rs 100. Green View Estate got Rs 104, Shanthi Supreme Rs 100, Kannavarai Estate and Ella Estate Rs 99 each, Hittakkal Estate, Kotagiri Estate, Professor and Sree Ram Supreme Rs 98 each, Vigneshwar Estate, Sree Tea Supreme, Shanthi Supreme and Deepika Supreme Rs 97 each and Selva Ganapathy Supreme Rs 95.

Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Curzon got Rs 133, Chamraj Rs 120, Mailoor Rs 119, Havukal, Corsley and Kairbetta Rs 118 each, Glendale Rs 114, Prammas and Kodanaad Rs 100 each.

BETTER DEMAND

Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 55-58 a kg for plain leaf grades and Rs 83-93 for the brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged Rs 57-60 a kg for plain dust grades and Rs 93-100 for brighter liquoring sorts.

“Following better demand, brighter liquoring CTC leaf got Rs 3 a kg more. Better mediums were steady. Mediums lost Rs 2 and plainers Rs 3. Orthodox brokens lost Rs 2-4. Better liquoring CTC dusts fetched Rs 5 more. Plainers lost up to Rs 3 and faced withdrawals. Primary orthodox dusts gained Rs 3-5. Secondary leafy and powdery dusts eased Rs 2-4”, an auctioneer told Business Line.

On the export front, Egypt bought in a wide range of Rs 63-82 a kg. CIS paid Rs 60-64. Iraq selected smaller brokens and fannings.
