Cyclone damages paddy crop in 50,000 acres

Hyderabad, Nov. 17

The cyclone Khai Muk (named after an island in Thailand) has damaged 50,000 hectares of paddy area in East, West Godavari and Krishna districts.

Though the extent could be much more with the vast stretches in Andhra Pradesh have been hit by heavy rains in the last few days, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture, told Business Line insisted that the damage was restricted to about 50,000 acres.

“We have asked the officials of the Civil Supplies Department to talk to the District Collectors of the cyclone-hit areas to assess the extent of damage. We have asked them to write to Food Corporation of India, indicating to it about the low-quality of paddy from these areas,” he said.

Stating that he had reviewed the situation with officials of the affected districts, Mr Raghuveera Reddy hoped that the damage would be minimised as the cyclone receded, allowing the flood water to flow on.

Though it gave a respite to the parched Rayalaseema region, Khai Muk resulted in extensive damage in the coastal areas where the farmers were getting ready for the harvest next month.
