Distress alert transmitters – high-tech devices which enable fishermen in stricken vessels to get in tough with the coast guard – were distributed here on Monday in the fishing harbour by the AP Fisheries Commissioner, Mr Aravind Kumar. At a function on the occasion, he said, the device costing Rs 10,000 was being provided to the fishermen at 50 per cent subsidy by the AP Fisheries Department. “It is low-priced, portable, and affordable,” he said an d urged the mechanised boat operators to make use of the scheme. —
