Slump in forest produce worries Girijan Co-op

Mr D.S. Redya Naik

Visakhapatnam, Nov. 17 The slump in procurement and sale of non-timber forest produce, previously known as minor forest produce, during the past two years is one of the factors causing concern to the Girijan Co-operative Corporation (GCC) here.

The fact was brought to the fore at a recent review meeting presided over by Mr D.S. Redya Naik, the State Girijan Welfare Minister.

The turnover in such produce came down from Rs 23 crore two years ago to Rs 16.84 crore during 2007-08. The reduced dependence of Girijans on such produce, due to other employment avenues provided by the Government, and erratic rainfall in many areas were identified as the factors responsible for the drastic slump.

The co-operative decided to impart training to tribals in the procurement of such produce, especially honey, and to take other corrective steps. A sum of Rs 1.4 crore would be spent for the purpose.

However, GCC succeeded in improving performance on other fronts and cut losses. The body could earn operational profit of Rs 8 crore during 2006-07 and 2007-08 and reduce losses to Rs 7.95 crore.

The Minister exhorted GCC officials to strive hard to wipe out the entire loss during the current year.

It was decided to take up an aggressive marketing drive to sell GCC products to different parts of the State and the country.

It was also decided to set up a soap manufacturing unit at Warangal at a cost of Rs 30 lakh within the next three months.

Dr Premchand, the Vice-chairman and Managing Director of the GCC, participated in the review meeting.
