Yale University’s India Initiative
New Delhi, Nov. 17
Yale University is undertaking its most “ambitious interdisciplinary effort of its kind to date” to become the destination for Indian and South Asian studies. With a $30-million commitment from Yale and $5 million from Rohini and Mr Nandan Nilekani, the “Yale India Initiative” was announced by Mr Richard C. Levin, President-Yale University, in the Capital on Monday. The university is hoping to raise an additional $20 million from donors, and hopes t
o see the initiative fully evolved in 3-5 years. The funds would be used to create faculty positions, curricular and scholarly programmes and research — all leading to an increased engagement with India. Acknowledging India’s rise as global power of economic and political consequence, Mr Nilekani, Co-Chairman, Infosys, said solutions from developing countries could not be replicated for challenges that faced India, in environment and healthcare for example. “If in 50 to 100 years India needs to achieve prime position, it will have to have strategic partnerships with universities and global centres of intellectual excellence,” he said.
