Good demand for quality teas at N. India sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Nov. 17

Last week, liquoring Assam CTC teas maintaining quality continued to meet with good demand at firm to dearer rates, according to tea auctioneers.

Selected medium and plainer categories as well as teas showing a decline in quality were irregularly lower. The major blender and Tata Tea were active with some support from other packeteers.

There were good enquiries from western India dealers while other internal sections were selective. Export buyers operated primarily for larger brokens and fannings.

Darjeeling offerings met with good demand. Whole leaf grades sold around last levels.

Improved brokens were steady while the remainder were lower. Fannings followed an easier trend. Traditional exporters and packeteers operated. Local dealers were active.

In the orthodox segment, the whole leaf grades eased in value. Selected well made brokens and fannings sold irregularly around last while remainder were lower following quality. West Asian and CIS shippers were the mainstay of the market with good support from the major blender for the fannings.

Most districts in North India reported seasonal weather and normal leaf intake.

Global scenario

The Mombasa market saw all categories tending lower and meeting with withdrawals. There was reduced activity from Pakistan packers, Egyptian packers, Afghanistan, Yemen, other West Asian countries and Kazakhstan, while the Bazaar maintained interest. The UK showed fair enquiry with little activity from Sudan. Russia and the Egyptian Government sector were quiet. Somalia was fairly active at lower levels.

The Colombo auction witnessed improved demand. Selected low growns were firm to dearer but the remainder sold at lower levels.
