Roadways Industry & Economy - Petroleum States - West Bengal Goods carriers want diesel price lowered Our Bureau Kolkata, Nov. 17 The All-India Confederation of Goods Owners’ Association has urged the Union Government to reduce the diesel price immediately, more so when the price of aviation turbine fuel is being systematically reduced. “This is a blatant discrimination,” Mr B. Channa Reddy, President of the association, said in a statement issued on Monday, pointing out that the 4.3 million trucks and trailers in the country provided jobs to more people than the airlines. He warned that the movement of goods vehicles throughout the country would come to a halt if the Government failed to take decision on the reduction of the diesel price soon. Fuel cost comparisonThe fuel cost accounted for around 55 per cent of the airlines’ operational cost while diesel accounted for 70 per cent of the operating cost of the commercial vehicles. Besides, the airlines enjoyed credit facility from the public sector oil companies while the operators of commercial vehicles must buy diesel in cash, he said. The last diesel price hike of Rs 3/litre came into force from the first week of June this year when the crude price was as high as $147/barrel. Govt assuranceThe crude price has since dropped to around $55/barrel but with no consequent cut in diesel price despite assurance from the Government that a reduction would be considered once the crude price came down to $67/barrel, he said. Pointing out that the slowdown had hit hard the commercial vehicle operators, Mr Reddy emphasised the need for invoking the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act for fixing minimum freight rate to be paid to the operators.
