Visakhapatnam, Nov. 18

A team from the European Union visited the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour on Tuesday, as a part of its State tour to inspect the sanitation facilities and hygiene at the fishing harbours and processing units.

The EU is one of the major importers of seafood from Andhra Pradesh. Mr G.V. Mohan Kumar, the Chairman of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), and Mr Aravind Kumar, the Commissioner of Fisheries, AP, accompanied the team.

The team will visit the fishing harbour and some of the processing units at Kakinada on Wednesday and later visit Bhimavaram in west Godavari district on Thursday.

Mr Aravind Kumar said the Visakhapatnam fishing harbour was one of the best in the country.

However, he said, keeping in view the long-term needs there was a need to establish a new fishing harbour.

Referring to the long-pending proposal to shift the fishing harbour from here to Bhimili, he said it would cost at least Rs 100 crore, and earlier, it was agreed that the Visakhapatnam port and the Union Agriculture Ministry would share it. However, the proposal would have to take a final shape.
