Roadways Truckers threaten to go on strike from Dec 21 Our Bureau New Delhi, Nov. 18 Nodal body for commercial transporters, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), has threatened to go on an indefinite strike from December 21, if the Government does not meet its demand for Rs 10 a litre cut in diesel prices, among other issues. AIMTC has also asked for a six-month exemption from paying toll tax, apart from a reduction in the prices of tyres by at least 35 per cent by breaking cartel of tyre manufacturers, abolition of all duties and taxes on tyres and allowing tax free import of tyres. Stating that a huge undisclosed amount is being extorted in bribes from the illiterate and fragmented transporters, AIMTC has stated in a press release that “it is no longer possible for the illiterate, hardworking industry to comply with the ever-increasing complexities of service tax or to pay ever increasing demands for illegal bribes”. AIMTC has resolved that if the following requests are not accepted by the Government by December 19, the transport industry will be compelled to shut down and park their vehicles nationwide from December 20, indefinitely till the same are accepted.
