Hotel industry seeks exemption from power cut

“Most of the hotels have standby generators only to provide for certain basic services, that too for a short time.”

Chennai, Nov. 18

Following the directives from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to hotels in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchi, and Salem on imposing power cut, the South India Hotels and Restaurants Association has appealed to the State Power Ministry to exempt the hotel industry.

The TNEB circular to hotels announced 40 per cent power cut from base demand and also directed them not to draw power during peak hours – between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

In its petition to the State Electricity Minister, Mr Arcot N. Veeraswami, the association has sought exemption from power cut and any restrictions as the hotel industry needs to provide air-conditioning and other services round-the-clock to its guests unlike any other manufacturing industry.

“Most of the hotels have standby generators only to provide for certain basic services such as lighting and elevator services, that too for a short time.

“These gensets cannot be run for more than two hours continuously,” Mr M.P. Purushothaman, President of the Association, said.

Moreover, with oil companies giving priority only to the transport industry when it comes to retailing diesel, hotels find it difficult to get sufficient diesel too. Even if some hotels get enough of the fuel, the power, thus, generated would cost 100 per cent more than regular power, said another hotelier.

“With hotels experiencing drop in tourist arrivals, the excess cost cannot be passed on to our clients,” he argued.

FHRAI president

Meanwhile, in an event last week, hoteliers from the South felicitated Mr Purushothaman on his election as President of the national apex body of the hotel industry Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India (FHRAI).

His election as President was announced at the 44th FHRAI convention held at Shanghai last month.
