Foreign Trade States - West Bengal Yunnan province favours renovating road link to Assam
Keen on connectivity: A file photo of a signboard of Stilwell Road in Upper Assam. Our Bureau Kolkata, Nov 19 The Yunnan province of China is in favour of renovating the Stilwell Road connecting Ledo in Assam with Yunnan through Myanmar. The road could act as a vital link between north-eastern India and China in facilitating trade and movement of traffic, Mr Li Jiashou, Chairman, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, said here on Wednesday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Mr Li said the Council is in talks with the Chinese Government to invite co-operation from India and Myanmar in developing the road link. Supply lineThe road, built during the Second World War as a supply line to China, is now largely underutilised, with very little traffic movement through it, he pointed out. “India has widened the stretch of 60 km of the Stilwell Road lying within its boundary while China has also built an Expressway joining Kunming with Myanmar,” Mr Li said. While Myanmar is building a connecting highway on the route, it also needs to reconstruct the stretch of 400 km lying in its territory, he added. Pact signedA delegation from Yunnan led by Mr Li on Wednesday signed a MoU with ICC to enhance trade and business collaboration with eastern India.
