Conspiracy seen behind clay unit attack

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 20

The Minister for Industries, Mr Elamaram Kareem, suspects conspiracy behind the attack on the clay factory of Ashapura Mine Chem Ltd in the Kinfra park at Menamkulam near here by a group of people alleging that it was causing air pollution.

The Minister, who visited the factory with a team officials on Thursday, told newspersons that the manner in which the attack was carried on by vandalising the furniture, computers and machinery pointed to a conspiracy from some quarters.

He said that the District Collector and revenue officials had already started investigation into the incident and their report was expected within a week. The Government would take suitable action after receiving the report, he added.

The Minister said that the company had invested Rs 100 crore in the project and was conducting trial runs when the attack rook place. Such incidents would discourage those coming to invest in the State and the Government would take stringent action against the guilty.

He noted that the Government had received complaints from the locals about pollution caused by the factory and the Government would examine them and was ready to set up a committee, if needed, to look into the issue.

The Minister pointed out that the other units operating in the Kinfra park and over 6,000 workers attached to them had not made any complaints about pollution from the clay factory. A ‘stop’ memo had been issued to the factory following the incident.
