Sugar States - Other States UP mills offer Rs 125 a quintal for sugarcane Our Bureau Chennai, Nov. 21 Private sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh on Friday offered to pay Rs 125 a quintal for the sugarcane that would be supplied to them by the growers. The offer was made during a hearing by the Allahabad High Court on petitions filed against the Uttar Pradesh Government’s decision to hike the State Advised Price (SAP) for sugarcane during the current season to September 2009 to Rs 140 a quintal for the common variety. The offer is the same as fixed by the State last season. A High Court bench comprising Mr Justice Arun Tandon and Mr Justice Dilip Gupta has been conducting a day-to-day since November 17 hearing on the petitions against the Government order passed on October 18. The hearing will continue on November 24. Bench’s queryThe offer by the private mills was in response to a query from the bench, which asked them how much they were ready to pay to the growers. The SAP fixed by the Uttar Pradesh has been opposed bitterly by the industry and the prices fixed since 2006-07 have been contested legally. More Stories on : Sugar | Other States
