AP finalises draft policy on organic farming

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Nov. 21 With a view to reducing the use of chemical fertilisers and increasing value of farm produce, the Andhra Pradesh Government has finalised a draft policy on organic farming.

The policy, which was discussed at a stakeholder meeting for making final changes, has mooted Andhra Pradesh Organic Development Programme to promote organic farming.

This would act as a nodal agency by bringing various stakeholders together. It would provide a single-window access to market and industry.

The policy also envisaged improving soil fertility and productivity and making farmers less dependent on supply of factory-made inputs.

Presenting the policy at the stakeholders meet at the Secretariat here on Friday, Ms Poonam Malakondaiah, Commissioner for Agriculture, said increased use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides and genetic modifications had created serious concerns. “We need to protect the soil health and environment,” she said.

Potential areas

Citing an example, she said organic farming could be encouraged in Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad for organic cotton. There was a good opportunity in growing organic vegetables, mangoes and amla.

Interestingly, the Government has decided to make this initiative a farmer-driven rather than the department-driven one.
