Export target review by Dec: Pillai

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Nov. 21 The Centre may review the merchandise export target for 2008-09 by end December, when it expects to have a fairly good idea of the export orders received for the current fiscal, the Commerce Secretary, Mr G.K. Pillai, said here today.

As of now, the merchandise export target remains at $200 billion for 2008-09. Mr Pillai, however, told newspersons that it may be difficult to meet this target given the global economic downturn.

“The global financial turmoil has had an impact on India. We will feel the impact even more in the next six months. We have not seen the worst yet,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Pillai said that the country’s merchandise exports stood at $12.8 billion in October 2008, about 12 per cent lower than the $14.6-billion recorded in the corresponding period last year. However, merchandise exports grew 21.2 per cent during April-October 2008.
