Tea prices decline at Coonoor sale

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Nov. 23 The market generally declined by Rs 3 a kg at Sale No: 47 of the auctions of Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) on Friday when the year’s second highest volume of 15.5 lakh kgs was offered.

But, brighter liquoring teas continued to remain in premium bracket. Among CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, four grades of Professor mark entered the Rs 100 price-band. Three marks of Darmona Estate fetched Rs 117 a kg each. Deepika Supreme, Hittakkal Estate and Shanthi Supreme got Rs 106 each, Homedale Rs 104, Selva Ganapathy and Hittakkal Estate Rs 102 each.

Among orthodox teas from corporate sector, Curzon got Rs 128, Tiger Hill and Mailoor Rs 125 each, Corsley Rs 122, Havukal Rs 120, Glendale and Kodanaad Rs 114 each, Chamraj Rs 110, Prammas Rs 106, Kairbetta Rs 105 and Colacumby Rs 102.

Quotations held by brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 54-56 a kg for plain leaf grades and Rs 85-95 for brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged Rs 54-57 a kg for plain dust grades and Rs 95-106 for brighter liquoring sorts.

“Brighter liquoring CTC leaf fetched good demand and prices of improved invoices rose by Rs 2 a kg. Better medium and medium grades eased Rs 2-3 and plainers Rs 4-5. When sellers refused to lower prices, teas were withdrawn unsold. Whole leaf orthodox was steady. Brokens lost Re 1 to Rs 2. Brighter liquoring CTC dusts gained Rs 3-4, but mediums lost same level. Plainers suffered from weak demand and a fair amount was withdrawn. In all, some 40 per cent of CTC and 20 per cent of orthodox offers were withdrawn,” an auctioneer told Business Line.

Trade front

On the export front, Egypt bought in a wide range of Rs 62-84 a kg. CIS paid Rs 52-54. Poland paid up to Rs 59.
