Quality teas witness good demand at Kolkata sale

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Nov. 23 Last week, selected liquoring teas maintaining quality continued to meet with good demand and sold around last levels, according to tea auctioneers.

Medium and plainer categories as well as teas showing a decline in quality were irregularly lower. Major blenders and Tata Tea were active with some support from other packeteers. There were good inquiries from Western India dealers while other internal sections were selective. Export buyers operated primarily for larger brokens and liquoring fannings.

Improved Darjeeling whole leaf and brokens grades were firm to dearer. Remainder whole leaf was steady. Plainer brokens tended irregularly lower while fannings were easier with plainer sorts neglected. Traditional exporters and packeteers operated. Local dealers were active.

In the Orthodox sale, selected well made whole leaf grades were around last levels while the remainder eased in value. Larger brokens sold around last but smaller brokens and fannings were easier. West Asian and CIS and shippers were the mainstay of the market with active support from the major blender. There was good enquiry from North India.

INTERNATIONAL

The Mombasa market saw all categories tending lower and meeting with withdrawals. Afghanistan was active but at lower levels with Pakistan Packers, Kazakhstan, Yemen and other West Asian countries fairly active. The Bazaar maintained activity. There was less interest from the UK and the Egyptian Government Sector. There was much less support from Sudan with Russia being quiet. Somalia was active but at much lower levels.
