Railways Industry & Economy - Coal Railways rakes in from coal demand Major coal loading zonal railways have not been hit hard by the slowdown in the economy. The reason: steady demand for coal by power houses. Take the case of East Central Railway. Coal accounts for nearly 95 per cent of its traffic throughput. In case of South East Central Railway, it is more than 80 per cent and for East Coast Railway, it is around 54 per cent. All these zonal railways have not experienced any drop in coal traffic. They, in fact, hope to exceed last year& #8217;s throughput. Yet, it will be wrong to presume that they are free from worries. For example, imported coking coal for steel plants constitutes part of the coal traffic handled by East Coast Railway and, with the crisis in the steel industry, coking coal import has dropped.
