Liverpool pitches for Indian trade

At a meeting with India’s High Commissioner to the UK recently at Liverpool, local shippers drew his attention to Port of Liverpool’s competitive edge for India, according to Exim News Service of Liverpool. Several prominent importing and exporting companies in the North-West of England, Britain’s strongest region outside London for trade with India, emphasised the need for a regular weekly direct container service between India and Port of Liverpool to m ake India’s exports into one of Great Britain’s largest markets more competitive. Port of Liverpool handles more than 40 million tonnes of cargo annually. The shippers were of the view that by moving through Liverpool, some 40,000 TEUs of annual Indian trade could avoid extra expenditure, estimated at Rs 24,000 a container, incurred in nearly 500 km of road transportation from the south of England. Ford/Jaguar, recently acquired by the Tata Group, have a plant at Liverpool; Surrendra Tea, India’s major tea producer that acquired Typhoo brand, has a packaging plant near Liverpool port; and Patak’s Foods, the largest Asian food manufacturing company in Europe, also has a plant near the port.
